CURRENT EVENTS IN U.S. HEALTH CARE PROJECT

PURPOSE:  The purpose of this project is to familiarize you with current health care issues in context: issues affecting our state and community, topics that are being debated nationally, and stories about individuals’ experiences in dealing with the healthcare system

GENERAL PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:  You will be required to read one newspaper or magazine article per week that discusses some aspect of the U.S. healthcare system.  You will type a one page paper summarizing and discussing the article.  You will keep both the articles and papers in a folder that will be collected three times throughout the semester for feedback and grading.  Read all the specific requirements to ensure credit for your folder.

ARTICLE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Articles must be related to healthcare including public health concerns, specific interventions, health research, political aspects and debates, community issues, insurance, delivery, etc.
  2. Articles must be from current newspapers or magazines and must be current for each due date.  No articles written prior to August 2009 will be accepted for the first collection.  All articles for the second folder check must be dated between August 24, 2009, and September 30, 2009.  All articles for the third folder check must be dated between October 1, 2009 and November 9, 2009.
  3. NO INTERNET ARTICLES ARE ACCEPTED.
  4. NO COPIES ARE ACCEPTED.  You must include the original article in your folder.
  5. NO ARTICLES FROM THE ALLIGATOR ARE ACCEPTED.
  6. The entire article must be included.
  7. Articles should be glued or stapled to a sheet of paper and attached into a folder.

 

PAPER REQUIREMENT:

  1. Paper and your reference (the article) must be in APA style: typed, double-spaced, 12 pt font, etc.  You can go to the APA website or the website listed below for more details if you have never used this style.

  1. Type the paper number at the top of the page, i.e., “Paper #1”
  2. Directly below the number type your reference.
  3. Type a CONCISE summary of the article.
  4. Type your thoughts on whatever issue is being discussed.
  5. Type one (or more) of the following:

 

      1.  Something interesting about you.
      2. A funny or interesting story about someone you know.
      3. A funny joke (lame jokes) may receive credit but there are no guarantees.
      4. Anything that will make your grader laugh.
  1. PAPERS SHOULD BE NO LONGER THAN ONE (1) PAGE

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR TURNNG YOUR FOLDER IN:

  1. The article and paper MUST be turned in attached into a three-hole folder, NOT a three-ring binder.  Binders will not be accepted.
  2. On the outside of your folder, with a big fat permanent marker, with big legible letters write the following:

 

      1. Your first and last name
      2. Your student ID
  1. Put the paper in front of the article, and secure BOTH the paper and the article (attached to a plain piece of paper) into three three-hole folder.  DO NOT put the paper or article in the pockets or on the inside of the folder.  Secure then both into the holes.  DO NOT put them in plastic sleeves.
  2. Keep each paper and article in the folder.  Put subsequent papers and articles behind the first in the same order.  At the end of the semester you should have ten papers and ten articles attached to your folder.
  3. Folders are to be turned in UPSTAIRS before class on the due date.  There will be alphabetical signs at the end of the rows.  Place your folder with the name side up in the alphabetical pile corresponding to Your LAST NAME.
  4. Late folders will not be accepted.

 

GRADING:  You will be required to have 10 satisfactory articles and papers in your folder by the third collection date.  If any of the 10 articles are unacceptable (see details outlined in article requirements) no credit will be given for the project.  If all 10 articles and papers are turned in on time and are done satisfactorily you will receive a full 10 points (see syllabus) for the project.

Acceptable articles will have the grader’s initials on them or the paper they are attached to.  If your article is not initialed, read the comments to determine why it was unacceptable and be sure not to make the same mistake again.  If an article is unacceptable than neither it nor its summary will count towards the 10 needed to receive credit for the project.

Papers will be graded based on following all of the requirements.  If any requirements aren’t met the papers will not receive credit.  Papers can also lose credit for poor or incomplete writing.  If a paper is acceptable it will have the grader’s initials on it.  It is not acceptable it will have comments explaining the problem.

Any article/paper combination that is unacceptable will not count towards the 10 needed to fulfill the project requirements.  You will have to include an additional article and summary in the next folder check to make up any that are unacceptable.  You must include the original attempt in your folder to receive credit for the makeup. 

ONLY ARTICLES/SUMMARIES THAT ARE TURNED IN ON TIME WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO BE MADE UP.

DUE DATES:  Folders will be collected on the following dates:

            Wednesday, August 26 – Article and Paper 1
            Wednesday, September 30 – Articles and Papers 1-5
            Monday, November 9 – Articles and Papers 1-10
