Purpose

The purpose of the Health Science Student Organization is to unify and promote cohesiveness and communication between prospective students and the junior and senior classes, and between the students and faculty. Also, HSSO provides a forum for prospective students and students within the program to get to know each other and more about their future professions through the student-mentoring program. It also makes available information, opportunities, and service activities throughout the university and the community.

Horse Farm 100- Sunday October 22, 2006- Horse Farm Hundred. The Horse Farm Hundred is a 100-mile non-compettive bike tour that takes place each fall. It is sponsored by the Gainesville Cycling Club. Riders have the choice of completing 25, 55, and 100-mile legs that wind through the beautiful horse country surrounding Ocala, Florida. All donations raised from Team PHHP go towards the endowed Horse Farm 100 Scholarship Fund for students in the College of Public Health and Health Professions. All interested are encouraged to contact horsefarm100@phhp.ufl.edu. Thanks for supporting our PHHP Team and College!

DSAJ Jacksonville Beach Buddy Walk-This event is a fundraiser to support research for children living with down syndrome. Participants walk one mile on Jacksonville Beach, and each team sponsors a child. There is also a picnic and concert. HSSO Lake Wauberg Picnic- Sunday October 16th, 2005- What better way to follow up a day at the beach than a day at the lake. Food, Fun, Sports!

HSSO T-shirt Contest- A Health Science T-shirt design contest winner wins a $20 gift certificate to Olive Garden, and their design goes on the shirt!

PHHPCC Beach Volleyball Tournament- This event raises money for HOPE (Horses Helping People). Teams are formed and there is a $4 participation fee.

Christmas Cookie Bake Sale- Everyone's in the Christmas spirit right after Thanksgiving. This is a great event to raise money for the organization.

Disability Day at Williston Elementary- The month of March honors those living with diabilities. HSSO visits Williston Elementary to set up workshops and games to teach the kids about what it's like to live with various disabilities. It's a lot of fun!!

Wheelchair Basketball Game-Teams formed compete against the UF wheelchair basketball team. The proceeds of the event are donated to the Gator Sport Camp held every summer for adults with disabilities.
